Why go
Nine cross vaults spread across three aisles, carried by just four square pillars. The exterior resembles a basilica, but the interior forms a hall church, a contrast easier to grasp by looking inside than from the roofline. The dark Neo-Gothic fittings largely reflect the 1902 renovation, rather than the medieval building campaign.
What to look for
- A roof turret stands in place of the tower that was planned but never built.
- The sacristy survives from the smaller late twelfth-century church.
- The large west rose window was added in the nineteenth century.
Useful to know
- Check with Romakloster parish that the church interior will be accessible before visiting for its vaults.
- Look at the roof profile first, then compare it with the arrangement of the three aisles inside.
