Why go
The late twelfth-century cross shows Christ with shod feet hanging free, rather than nailed to the wood. Made for the earlier church, it survived the rebuilding around it. The large painted Saint Lawrence, recognisable by his gridiron, gives another way into the imagery of a church once dedicated to him.
What to look for
- Eleventh-century Christian runestones survive in the church.
- Romanesque west and choir portals contrast with the Gothic nave entrance.
- A single central pillar supports the almost square nave.
Useful to know
- Confirm interior access with Stenkumla parish before travelling for the crucifix and paintings.
- Compare the entrances outside before turning to the older objects retained within the later building.
