Why go
The church uses local sandstone, with tougher limestone reserved for the entrance portals. That material contrast is worth noticing alongside the nearby defensive tower. The building once served as a navigational aid and appeared in a Dutch sailing book in 1627, connecting a small parish church with journeys well beyond southern Gotland.
What to look for
- The separate circular defensive tower survives as a substantial medieval ruin.
- Medieval Passion paintings decorate the church interior.
- A fifteenth-century wooden crucifix remains among the furnishings.
Useful to know
- Include the round tower in the visit; it is separate from the church’s own western tower.
- Confirm interior access with the parish before travelling for the paintings.
