Why go
The small cupboard in the south wall of the rounded apse has richly carved doors from around 1300, carrying runic inscriptions. It is a quieter detail than the tower but a strong reason to look closely. The sandstone font, attributed to Majestatis, is older still, dating from the late twelfth century.
What to look for
- One decorated central pillar carries the nave vaults.
- A chamber in the tower base has a small viewing opening towards the nave.
- Peter Harding’s tombstone recalls the leader of the peasant side in Gotland’s 1288 civil war.
Useful to know
- Confirm entry with the parish before travelling specifically for the carved doors and font.
- Begin with the north tower portal, then compare the tower’s height with the lower rounded apse.
