Vallstena Church
Vallstena makes an interrupted medieval rebuilding visible in its uneven shape. The older western church and larger eastern section offer a clear comparison of Romanesque and Gothic forms.
The building preserves two different ambitions: a thirteenth-century western nave and tower beside a larger eastern rebuilding from the fourteenth century. Work stopped before the whole nave was replaced. Inside, carved and painted moulding follows the arch between nave and choir, drawing attention to the junction between these parts.
What to look for
Three roofed gateways punctuate the low churchyard wall.
The oldest gateway retains thirteenth-century sculpted details.
Tombstones beside the altar combine Latin inscriptions with Old Gutnish written in runes.
Useful to know
Confirm interior access with the parish before travelling for Vallstena’s paintings and tombstones.
