Vamlingbo Church
Vamlingbo’s broad interior is anchored by a large medieval soul-weighing mural. Coloured limestone pillars and reused carvings add reasons to pause beyond the central painted scene.
On the north wall, Archangel Michael weighs Emperor Henry II’s soul in a mural from the later thirteenth century. Its scale rewards a view across the nave before closer study. Alternating red and grey limestone in the pillars adds colour to the spacious hall, whose nave and choir date from the mid-thirteenth century.
What to look for
The Byzantios font stands inside the south nave entrance.
Weathered Romanesque reliefs survive in the south facade.
The tower’s upper section was rebuilt after a lightning strike in 1817.
Useful to know
Check interior access with Sudrets pastorate before making the mural the reason for your journey.
Inspect the south-wall reliefs first, then compare their older carving with the font inside.
