Little River falls and mountain schoolhouse

See Meigs Falls and the Sinks from their roadside viewing areas, then visit Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse and end with a picnic beside the river at Metcalf Bottoms.

Little River falls and mountain schoolhouse

Why go

This route mixes two brief waterfall views with a small piece of mountain community history. Begin at the Meigs Falls pullout, then drive about a mile along Little River Road to the Sinks; keep to the designated viewing areas at both. Continue to Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse to see the one-room building and nearby cemetery. Finish at Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area, where the river offers a slower end to the day. The schoolhouse can be reached by the seasonal Little Greenbrier Road, so check the road status before you leave. When the road is closed, the schoolhouse requires a separate hike from Metcalf Bottoms and changes this route’s timing.
