Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Heraklion’s museum gives essential indoor context for Crete’s Minoan sites, especially before Knossos. The collection helps distinguish original finds from reconstructed palace surfaces.
The museum brings together Minoan objects from across Crete, including pieces associated with Knossos that are absent from the palace site. Follow the galleries by period to make sense of the frescoes, pottery and small objects. It is a strong indoor counterpart to an exposed palace visit.
What to look for
Compare the frescoes with smaller objects from palace excavations.
Useful to know
Allow separate time from Knossos; the museum is in central Heraklion and the palace requires its own road transfer.
