Kerameikos Archaeological Site
Kerameikos combines the ancient city gates with a cemetery, making it a quieter walk through Athenian history. The archaeological museum adds context to the funerary monuments outside.
Why go
The city-gate remains and ancient cemetery tell a story about boundaries, burial and movement into Athens. Spend time with the site layout before moving to the grave markers, so the monuments make sense in their original setting. This is a quieter open-air archaeological visit with little shelter.
What to look for
Follow the burial monuments along the route of the old Sacred Way.
Useful to know
Use the archaeological-site entrance rather than navigating only to the modern Kerameikos neighbourhood; check museum access separately.
