Temple of Olympian Zeus
The surviving Olympieion columns anchor an open-air archaeological visit near central Athens. Walking the grounds gives a sense of the giant temple’s former scale and its relationship to the surrounding city.
The enormous surviving columns communicate the scale of the Temple of Olympian Zeus even though much of the building is gone. Treat this as a focused open-air monument stop near the historic centre, with a close look at the remaining colonnade rather than a full archaeological complex.
What to look for
Gauge the scale of the former Zeus temple from its standing columns.
Useful to know
The remains stand on an exposed city site near Hadrian’s Arch; confirm access and leave shade and water time in hot weather.
