Old Burying Ground
Read Halifax's early history through carved gravestones and the prominent Welsford-Parker Monument in this compact burial ground beside the Barrington and Spring Garden intersection.
The surviving stones reveal individual lives behind the familiar story of a colonial port. Different lettering, symbols and materials make the cemetery worth observing slowly, while the monumental entrance shows how public commemoration changed over time. This is a burial place as well as a historic site, so keep to paths and treat inscriptions with care.
