Akaka Falls State Park
A short rainforest loop reaches the 422-foot ʻAkaka Falls north of Hilo. The gorge, dense foliage and second view toward Kahūnā Falls make the walk richer than a single lookout.
Why go
Follow the loop rather than stopping at the first rail. The path moves through bamboo and tropical plants before framing the drop across the gorge. Mist and rain change footing and visibility, so this works best as a flexible Hamakua Coast stop.
What to look for
ʻAkaka drops across a deep green gorge.
The loop also passes a view toward Kahūnā Falls.
Useful to know
Walk the full loop for both waterfall perspectives.
Use shoes with grip after rain.
