Haleakalā National Park
Haleakalā National Park spans Maui’s high volcanic summit and a separate coastal district. The summit’s cinder landscape and huge views are the main draw for many visitors.
Why go
The crater-like erosional valley, high-altitude vegetation and shifting cloud layers make this a landscape to read slowly. Sunrise is only one way to see it; later light also reveals the ridges and cinder colors. Weather can erase views quickly, so leave time for changing conditions.
What to look for
Cinder terrain spreads below the summit.
Cloud layers change the mountain view.
Useful to know
Check current sunrise entry rules before planning the summit visit.
Pack for cold, sun and high altitude.
