Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park protects the landscapes of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. Crater overlooks, lava terrain and native ecosystems make it the island’s defining geology visit.
Why go
This is a place to understand an island still being made, even when flowing lava is not visible. Summit terrain, crater margins and older flows show different phases of volcanism. Hawaiian cultural interpretation adds a human story to that changing land, making a slow visit more rewarding than a quick search for eruption views.
What to look for
Crater margins reveal layers of volcanic change.
Older lava flows support new plant growth.
Useful to know
Check the park alert page on the day of travel.
Choose open overlooks rather than following an old eruption map.
