Ka Lae
Ka Lae, or South Point, is the exposed southern tip of Hawaiʻi Island and the United States. Wind, lava cliffs and ancient cultural traces define the remote visit.
Why go
The point is more than a map extremity: it has long been associated with early Hawaiian settlement and fishing. Stand back from the cliff edge and read the open ocean and hardened lava together. The approach is isolated, with strong currents below; treat the shore as a viewpoint rather than a casual swimming stop.
What to look for
The lava coast meets an open southern horizon.
Cultural traces survive around the point.
Useful to know
Stay back from cliff edges.
Do not enter the water here without authoritative local guidance.
