Kalaupapa National Historical Park
Kalaupapa National Historical Park preserves the history of people forcibly isolated with Hansen’s disease on Molokaʻi. Access is tightly controlled and the visit requires respectful preparation.
Why go
The peninsula’s cliffs and settlements tell a history of forced separation, resilience and continuing community. National Park Service interpretation centers the people who lived with Hansen’s disease here, rather than reducing the place to one famous figure. The physical isolation of the peninsula helps explain the scale and lasting impact of that history.
What to look for
Sea cliffs isolate the Kalaupapa peninsula.
Historic settlements preserve residents’ stories.
Useful to know
Check current NPS entry, permit and transport guidance before planning a visit.
Do not attempt to enter the restricted peninsula independently.
