Laupāhoehoe
Laupāhoehoe’s lava-built point and small coastal community sit on the Hamakua shore. The shape of the cape and the memorial landscape give a short stop real context.
Why go
Ancient smooth lava flows created the jutting shoreline that gives the place its name. The coast is also linked to the 1946 tsunami, remembered locally with a memorial to those lost. Visit quietly, observe the sea from safe ground and leave time for the winding descent and return.
What to look for
An old lava flow forms the coastal point.
A memorial recalls the 1946 tsunami.
Useful to know
Allow time for the descent off the main road.
Keep a safe distance from the exposed shoreline.
