Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau preserves a coastal place of refuge and royal grounds. Reconstructed structures, heiau and the shoreline explain a central part of precontact Hawaiian society.
Why go
A visit is most rewarding when the refuge is understood as a place within the kapu system, not simply as picturesque ruins. Walk the interpreted grounds slowly and notice the Great Wall, ceremonial structures and coastal setting. This is a sacred historic site; follow National Park Service guidance on where to walk and photograph.
What to look for
The Great Wall defines the refuge precinct.
Ceremonial structures stand beside the coast.
Useful to know
Stay on the marked interpretive route.
Follow park protocols at sacred structures.
