Waipio Valley
Waipiʻo Valley opens beneath high green cliffs on Hawaiʻi Island’s northeast coast. The overlook gives a strong sense of scale without entering the valley floor.
Why go
The valley has deep importance in Hawaiian history and remains a lived-in place. From the lookout, visitors can understand the steep walls and the meeting of river, farmland and sea. That broad view carries more meaning when treated as a perspective on a community and landscape, rather than an invitation to descend for a photograph.
What to look for
Steep cliffs enclose the valley floor.
River, farmland and ocean meet below the lookout.
Useful to know
Use the overlook unless current rules authorize descent.
Respect the privacy of valley residents.
