Kolme seppää – The Three Smiths

Felix Nylund’s 1932 bronze sculpture of three smiths stands at the meeting of Aleksanterinkatu and Mannerheimintie, one of central Helsinki’s clearest street-level landmarks.

Kolme seppää – The Three Smiths

Why go

The work is more than a convenient marker between Stockmann and the Old Student House. Its muscular, tightly grouped figures turn a busy junction into a compact public monument, while visible wartime damage connects the square to Helsinki’s experience of the Continuation War.

What to look for

  • Three nude smiths raise their hammers around a central anvil in a strongly unified composition.
  • Bombing in 1944 left marks on the base and a shrapnel hole in the anvil.
  • The sculpture occupies Kolmensepänaukio directly opposite Stockmann.

Useful to know

  • The outdoor monument is always accessible and is easiest to examine from the pedestrian square around its base.
