Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine

Within Hiroshima Castle grounds, Gokoku Shrine remains an active place of worship. Its postwar rebuilding sits beside the older moat and walls.

Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine

Why go

The shrine began in the nineteenth century and moved before being destroyed in the bombing; the present buildings reflect reconstruction. Visiting it adds living ritual to a castle walk focused on political history and architecture. Respect prayer activity, and distinguish the shrine precinct from the separate castle exterior visit.
