Why go
Artefacts, models and interactive displays explain how archaeological finds and surviving architecture reveal Hong Kong's past. The setting makes those ideas tangible: former military accommodation now serves a public cultural purpose. Visit for a closer look at how the city interprets and reuses its older buildings.
What to look for
- Explore Our Heritage brings together archaeology and built heritage.
- Two former Whitfield Barracks blocks house the centre.
The full story
The two barracks blocks were built around 1910 to accommodate British troops. Their later uses trace a change in this part of Tsim Sha Tsui from military land to public space. The military returned the land in 1967, allowing the former compound to be redeveloped for leisure uses. Before the Heritage Discovery Centre opened in 2005, these buildings housed the Hong Kong Museum of History between 1983 and 1998. That sequence gives the architecture a second layer of meaning: the blocks have served both as historical buildings and as places for interpreting history. Looking at them within Kowloon Park, you can connect the exhibition's interest in conservation with the survival of the venue itself. The surrounding park occupies a landscape once organised around a very different purpose.
Useful to know
- Allow about 75 minutes for the permanent exhibition.
- Combine the galleries with a walk through Kowloon Park.
