Why go

Its position among the ferry piers connects maritime history with the working water outside. Chinese maritime history and marine sustainability provide two complementary ways to read Hong Kong’s relationship with the sea. The museum moved from Murray House in Stanley to Central in 2013, bringing that wider story directly to the waterfront where many visitors encounter the city.

What to look for

  • C Deck galleries explore Chinese maritime history.
  • The Marine Discovery Centre focuses on marine sustainability.

Useful to know

  • Check the museum’s current gallery and entrance notices before visiting, especially if you have a particular object in mind.
  • Pair the museum at Pier 8 with a Star Ferry crossing from neighbouring Pier 7.
