Why go
This downtown route focuses on the layers of Honolulu’s commercial, religious, and performance architecture. Begin in the Merchant Street Historic District, compare the C. Brewer and Stangenwald buildings, then move toward St. Andrew’s Cathedral and Hawaiʻi Theatre. Hawaiʻi Pacific University and First Hawaiian Center help explain how working institutions occupy the same compact core. The former Aloha Stadium is excluded because the original structure is being dismantled. Hotel landmarks in Waikīkī are optional extensions rather than natural walking stops from downtown. Keep the core route on foot and save the resort buildings for a separate shoreline outing.
