Why go
Choosing an arrival airport affects your first drive through Houston. Bush Intercontinental lies north of Downtown, while Hobby is on the southeastern side toward the I-45 corridor. Compare each airport with your accommodation and any plans farther south, including Galveston, instead of choosing by the flight price alone.
The full story
Houston's two principal commercial airports have different names and codes: George Bush Intercontinental is IAH, and William P. Hobby is HOU. Keep that distinction visible when coordinating flights, a rental car or a meeting with someone arriving separately. An itinerary labeled simply Houston can conceal a significant change in the onward journey. Bush Intercontinental's northern location and Hobby's position southeast of Downtown are useful geographic starting points. They do not establish a fixed transfer time. Compare the airport with the address where you will actually stay, especially if your trip continues toward the coast rather than central Houston. Both airports publish ground transportation information. Review the page for your specific airport before choosing a rental car, taxi, ride app or other connection. Confirm the collection point for that choice rather than assuming arrangements at IAH and HOU are interchangeable.
Useful to know
- Match the IAH or HOU code across your flight, car booking and pickup arrangements.
- Use the relevant airport's official ground transportation page to confirm your collection point.
