Rothko Chapel
Rothko Chapel is a quiet encounter with painting and changing light, rather than a conventional gallery circuit. Its contemplative setting rewards putting devices away and looking slowly.
Fourteen dark, subtly colored Mark Rothko paintings surround visitors in a non-denominational chapel whose design was shaped by the artist. The skylight is part of how the paintings are encountered. Outside, Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk connects this place of reflection with a dedication to Martin Luther King Jr.
What to look for
Fourteen Rothko murals surround the chapel interior.
The restored skylight shapes the interior light.
Broken Obelisk stands in a reflecting pool outside.
Useful to know
Remain silent inside, put technology away and keep at least two feet from the paintings.
Check the chapel calendar before combining it with nearby Menil sites; programs can interrupt public visits.
