San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site
The San Jacinto battlefield combines outdoor historical markers with a towering monument, museum and observation deck. Choose between exploring the grounds and adding the separate indoor components.
Sam Houston’s forces defeated Santa Anna’s army here on April 21, 1836, in a battle lasting eighteen minutes. The coastal prairie landscape and battlefield markers give that short event a physical setting. The monument and museum provide another perspective, making this a focused Texas-history outing rather than simply a viewpoint stop.
What to look for
The San Jacinto Monument rises 567 feet above the grounds.
Battlefield markers sit within the coastal prairie landscape.
The monument contains museum galleries and an observation deck.
Useful to know
Allow roughly ninety minutes to three hours, depending on whether you add the monument and museum.
Check monument and museum access separately from the grounds; their opening days differ.
Choose the monument and museum over natural-terrain battlefield hikes if uneven ground is a concern.
