Church of the Nativity
The ancient basilica at Manger Square marks the traditional birthplace of Jesus. Its low entrance, surviving mosaics and grotto make this Bethlehem's central pilgrimage stop, with stairs and uneven surfaces below.
Why go
The basilica holds layers of Christian building and worship around the Grotto of the Nativity. The small Door of Humility changes your entrance into the great nave, where columns, wall mosaics and glimpses of older floor mosaics recall the church's long history. The grotto's marked birthplace is the devotional focus, but the building above it rewards attention too.
What to look for
The low Door of Humility opens into a much larger basilica.
Mosaics survive on the walls and beneath sections of the later floor.
A marked spot in the grotto identifies the traditional birthplace of Jesus.
Useful to know
Start at Manger Square and allow time for both the basilica and, if accessible, the grotto.
The grotto and side chapels involve stairs and uneven flooring; check current access around services or seasonal observances.
