Why go
Walking is the clearest way to read the relationship between the Main Market Square, Florian Gate, Wawel and the streets between them. The Planty adds a green loop around the Old Town, so a route can alternate monuments, squares and quieter paths without relying on transport.
The full story
Kraków's historic centre is unusually legible on foot because several major landmarks sit within a connected walk. The Royal Way runs through the old core from the area of Florian Gate toward the Main Market Square and Wawel, making the city's ceremonial geography visible in sequence. The Planty is the green belt that traces the former line of the city walls, creating an alternative to the commercial streets at the centre. Near Wawel, the paths around the castle add a change of pace and open views after the denser fabric of the square. This compactness does not mean every journey in Kraków is short, but it makes walking the natural first choice for the Old Town and its immediate edges.
Useful to know
- Use the Planty as a calmer link between the Old Town's gates, squares and Wawel rather than following only the busiest streets.
- In winter, wear footwear suited to wet or snowy pavements and allow more time for the same walk.
