The full story
This surviving medieval gate marks the Old Town’s northern entrance and gives the Royal Road a strong architectural starting point.
Start here to read Kraków’s lost defensive circuit before entering the commercial streets of the Old Town. The tall Gothic stone tower, Baroque roof and surviving wall fragments show several periods at once, while the Barbican directly outside explains how the entrance was protected.
- The Gothic tower is capped by a later Baroque metal roof.
- An 18th-century relief of St. Florian faces the Old Town side.
- The north face carries a stone eagle based on a design by Jan Matejko.
Approach from the Barbican, pass beneath the gate and continue along Floriańska Street to the Main Market Square.
View the exterior at any time; interior access belongs to the ticketed City Defence Walls route.
Keep the museum interior optional if your priority is the longer Royal Road walk.
