Why go
The present church, built from 1689 to 1705 after its Gothic predecessor became too small, was modelled on Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome. Its close relationship with the Jagiellonian University culminates at the tomb of St. John Cantius, while Baldassare Fontana’s stucco gives the interior its sculptural force.
What to look for
- The Baroque design by Tylman van Gameren draws on Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome.
- Baldassare Fontana’s stucco shapes the richly layered interior.
- The tomb of St. John Cantius stands in the right transept.
Useful to know
- Combine the church with a walk through the adjacent Jagiellonian University quarter.
- Verify sightseeing access and visit outside services so the interior can be viewed respectfully.
