From the Kraków World / Itineraries

Kraków's Royal and Medieval Core

A concentrated walk from Main Market Square through the Old Town to Wawel, linking the city's trading centre with its royal hill.

Kraków's Royal and Medieval Core

Why go

Main Market Square, St. Mary’s Basilica and the Cloth Hall establish the medieval city before Grodzka Street leads south to Wawel Cathedral and the Royal Castle. Start instead at Florian Gate and the Barbican if you want the northern defenses without doubling back. The sequence suits a full day on foot, but entering both Wawel sites makes the pace demanding, so choose the Castle or Cathedral as the priority when time is short.

Useful to know

  • If including Florian Gate and the Barbican, begin there; otherwise start at Main Market Square and continue south through the Old Town to Wawel.
  • Keep Florian Gate and the Barbican optional if you plan to enter both Wawel sites.
