Sigismund Bell
A climb inside Wawel Cathedral leads to a monumental Renaissance bell whose scale is easier to grasp at close range.
Why go
Add the tower route if the physical object interests you more than another furnished room. Cast by Hans Behem in 1520 for King Sigismund I, the bronze bell has a 2.42-metre lip and a massive clapper, making its engineering as striking as its national symbolism.
What to look for
The bronze body measures 2.42 meters across at the lip and 2.41 meters high.
A Renaissance Latin inscription names King Sigismund I as the bell’s patron.
Relief plaques include Saint Sigismund dressed with royal insignia.
Useful to know
Treat the bell as an extension of the cathedral visit, since access follows the cathedral visitor route.
Choose the cathedral interior instead if a tower climb does not suit your mobility or available time.
Recheck access before visiting because religious observances can change the visitor route.
