Old Synagogue
Kazimierz’s oldest surviving synagogue building now presents Jewish religious life and Kraków’s Jewish history through its architecture and museum displays.
Why go
Visit to connect the architecture of a fortress synagogue with the community that used it as a religious and civic center until 1939. The heavy walls, high windows and reconstructed interiors give physical context to exhibitions on worship, family life and custom.
What to look for
High windows, buttresses and thick masonry give the building its fortress-like character.
The 17th-century women’s prayer room survives as a distinct interior space.
A plaque recalls Tadeusz Kościuszko’s 1794 address seeking Jewish support for independence.
Useful to know
Set aside time for both the architecture and the thematic displays rather than treating it as a quick exterior stop.
Combine it with a wider Kazimierz walk to place the building within the former Jewish quarter.
Check the official calendar because the permanent exhibition closes on every second Thursday of the month.
