Why go
Visit for the meeting point of city ritual and church history. Royal coronation processions began here with a university welcome, while royal funeral processions departed for Wawel Cathedral. Its repeated survival and rebuilding also explain why St. Florian, shown carrying water, became associated in Poland with firefighters and chimney sweeps.
What to look for
- The church stands at the northern end of Matejko Square, near the Barbican.
- Its present form reflects a Baroque rebuilding after the Polish–Swedish wars.
- Images of St. Florian often show the Roman officer carrying water.
Useful to know
- See it as the northern starting point of a Royal Route walk toward the Old Town and Wawel.
- Confirm sightseeing access locally and avoid entering during services.
