Why go
The building adds a compact layer of commercial and wartime history to a walk north of Pasar Seni. Designed by Arthur Oakley Coltman, it was Kuala Lumpur’s tallest building when completed and later gained another floor. Its wartime use by the Japanese secret police gives the restrained façade a darker context.
What to look for
- A grey historic façade designed by Arthur Oakley Coltman
- The extra upper storey added after the building’s original 1930 completion
- A former skyline landmark with a documented wartime government use
Useful to know
- Plan to appreciate the exterior; do not assume the interior is open to visitors.
- Include it on a walk from Pasar Seni toward Central Market and the Jalan Tun H. S. Lee corridor.
- View the façade from across the street where its full height is easier to read.
