Odeon of Lyon
A rare small Roman performance hall beside the large theatre, distinguished by its intimate scale and fragments of colored marble paving.
Why go
The odeon explains that Roman entertainment needed more than one kind of venue. Its smaller seating bowl suited music, declamation and meetings, while the richly colored orchestra floor signaled refinement. It is most rewarding when compared immediately with the neighboring theatre.
What to look for
The compact semicircular seating bowl
Fragments of multicolored marble in the orchestra
Its close relationship with the large theatre
Useful to know
Visit both Roman venues in the same circuit.
Allow for uneven ancient paving and exposed weather.
