Why go
Few places explain central Lyon so quickly. The square sets monumental façades against contemporary paving by Daniel Buren and Christian Drevet, while the fountain supplies a dramatic sculptural focus. It also provides a natural starting point for the Presqu'île or Croix-Rousse slopes.
What to look for
- Bartholdi's four-horse fountain on the north side
- The grid of 69 black-granite basins across the paving
Useful to know
- Cross the square slowly to compare its architecture from each side.
- Pair it with the museum courtyard or continue uphill toward Croix-Rousse.
