Bartholdi Fountain

Four powerful horses pull an allegorical chariot across Place des Terreaux in one of Lyon's most theatrical works of public sculpture.

Bartholdi Fountain

Why go

A quick circuit reveals far more than the familiar front view. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi modeled the horses with different gestures and strong movement, while water turns the lead group into a changing composition. The fountain also helps explain the square's nineteenth- and twentieth-century redesigns.

What to look for

  • Four horses surging from the chariot
  • Water moving across the dark lead figures

Useful to know

  • Walk around the basin rather than viewing it only from the square's centre.
  • Include it within a Place des Terreaux visit rather than planning a separate detour.
