Cusco
Cusco is a city to explore on foot, where Inca street lines and colonial buildings occupy the same historic center. Use it as a base and a place to understand the layers behind nearby ruins.
Why go
The former Inca capital gives the region's monuments a human setting. Around the center, look for Inca masonry beneath later churches and houses; the Spanish kept much of the urban framework while building over it. At Qorikancha and around the Cathedral, those layers are close enough to compare in one walk.
What to look for
Inca stonework still shapes parts of the historic street plan.
Colonial churches and palaces stand over earlier Inca structures.
Useful to know
Explore the historic center as a walking area, then plan museum and church entries separately.
Allow time to adjust to Cusco's high elevation before a demanding trek.
