Huayna Picchu
The steep peak above Machu Picchu offers a high view of the ruins and the Urubamba bend. It adds a demanding climb to a visit that is otherwise focused on the stone city.
Why go
From above, the terraces and buildings read as a compact settlement fitted into a narrow ridge, with the river far below. Inca steps and terraces on the mountain also show that this peak was part of the built landscape, rather than just a backdrop to it.
What to look for
The llaqta's platforms and terraces appear together from the summit.
The Urubamba River curves around the mountain below.
Inca steps and terraces occupy the peak itself.
Useful to know
Select the dedicated Waynapicchu route when arranging a Machu Picchu visit.
Treat the ascent as a steep mountain walk and leave room for it in your day.
