Madeira and Porto Santo
Madeira pairs a steep, green main island with the sandy shore of Porto Santo. Base in Funchal for city visits, then allow separate outings for the mountains and north coast.
The island changes quickly with elevation and aspect: Funchal occupies a sheltered southern bay, while a central ridge, deep valleys and a wetter north create very different days out. Porto Santo offers a gentler, beach-focused contrast to Madeira’s cliffs and mountain paths.
What to look for
Funchal rises from its harbour into an amphitheatre of hills.
Madeira’s central ridge divides the greener north from the drier south.
Porto Santo is the inhabited island with the long sandy beach.
Useful to know
Treat the mountain interior and north coast as separate outings from a Funchal city day.
Plan Porto Santo as a separate island trip; check current air and ferry schedules before committing.
