The full story

The cathedral begun in 1493 combines Gothic and Manueline details at the heart of old Funchal. Its central position makes a brief architectural visit easy to fit between city sights.

Start outside with the stone portal, then look upward inside for the building’s historic detail. Its central position makes it a concise architectural stop on a city walk, while the late-fifteenth-century origins connect the streets to Madeira’s early settlement period.
