Why go
Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira came ashore at Machico in 1419. That history gives the bay more meaning than a seafront stroll alone. The nearby historic centre, Mother Church and Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo make a compact route through the town's past.
What to look for
- Machico Bay, the setting of the 1419 Portuguese landing
- The Mother Church in the historic centre
- The Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo
Useful to know
- Begin at the bay, then continue through the historic centre toward the church and fort.
- Keep the riverbank and São Roque path in mind if you want to extend the walk beyond the central streets.
