Paul do Mar
This west-coast fishing village sits between high cliffs and a pebble shore. Its harbour and old industrial traces reward a slow look more than a conventional beach day.
Paul do Mar gives you a close view of Madeira's fishing coast: boats beside the harbour, a stony waterfront and cliffs immediately behind the settlement. The chimney of a former tuna-canning factory adds a reminder that the shore has long been a working place, not only a scenic one.
What to look for
Fishing boats and the harbour at the village's edge
The pebble shore beneath steep cliffs
The chimney of the former tuna-canning factory
Useful to know
Walk from the harbour along the waterfront to take in the village's setting.
Treat the pebble shore as a place to observe the coast, rather than assuming it offers a sandy swim stop.
