Porto Santo Island
Porto Santo offers a different island day from Madeira: a long sweep of golden sand and calm water, with volcanic terrain and traces of its seafaring past beyond the beach.
The nine-kilometre beach is the main reason to make the journey, especially if you want space for a long shoreline walk. Look beyond the sand, too: Porto Santo's volcanic formations and its connection with Christopher Columbus give the small island a character distinct from Madeira's steep, greener coast.
What to look for

Useful to know
Allow time for the beach and at least one inland stop; the island is more than a single stretch of sand.
Plan island transport separately from your time on Madeira.
