Central Madrid Landmarks

A compact set of royal, civic and theatre landmarks around Plaza Mayor, the Palacio Real, Catedral de la Almudena and Gran Vía.

Central Madrid Landmarks

Why go

This one-day route gives first-time visitors a coherent west-to-east introduction to central Madrid. Begin at Plaza Mayor, continue through Palacio Real, Catedral de la Almudena and Teatro Real, then cross Puerta del Sol toward Gran Vía and the Metrópolis Building. The sequence balances major interiors with public spaces and exterior architecture. Treat the palace or theatre as the main indoor commitment, and shorten the final avenue walk if queues or a slower pace make the full circuit unrealistic.

Useful to know

  • Pair Plaza Mayor with the Palacio Real, Catedral de la Almudena and Teatro Real, which occupy the western side of the centre.
  • Continue toward Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía only if the pace leaves room for a longer street walk.
  • Check the official timetable before relying on access to palace, cathedral or theatre interiors.
