The full story
This fully pedestrianized central square is a compact lesson in Madrid’s civic symbols, best approached as a detail hunt rather than a scenic retreat.
Sol gathers national and city emblems into one busy public space. The Kilómetro Cero plaque marks the symbolic origin of Spain’s radial roads, the clock frames the Twelve Grapes New Year ritual, and the Bear and Strawberry Tree represents Madrid itself.
Walk one complete circuit to find the ground-level plaque as well as the larger statues.
Continue to Plaza Mayor for an immediate contrast with a porticoed Habsburg square.
