From the Madrid World / Itineraries

Madrid's Core, Museums and Outer Stops

A wide-ranging set of Madrid landmarks, museum collections, parks, northern districts and separate excursions beyond the city boundary for later planning.

Madrid's Core, Museums and Outer Stops

Why go

Treat this final set as a menu for distinct days rather than a single route. Build an art-focused day around Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, adding Plaza de Colón or the Temple of Debod as an exterior contrast. Toledo, the Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Valle de Cuelgamuros are separate out-of-city excursions; choose only one for a given day so travel time does not erase the reason for going.

Useful to know

  • Build a museum day around the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza only if you are prepared to choose one collection as the main visit.
  • Use Plaza de Colón as a northern marker between central museums and the Castellana corridor.
  • Plan Toledo, San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Cuelgamuros as separate out-of-city excursions.
