Why go
The Thyssen makes art history unusually easy to follow in sequence. Nearly 1,000 paintings carry the eye from late-medieval and Renaissance work through Impressionism and into twentieth-century Europe and America, with artists such as Van Eyck, Caravaggio, Monet, O'Keeffe and Hopper marking the shifts.
What to look for
- Late-medieval Italian works and early Netherlandish painting establish the collection's starting point.
- Caravaggio and other Renaissance and Baroque painters lead into the nineteenth century.
- Monet, Van Gogh, O'Keeffe and Hopper show the collection's reach into modern European and American art.
Useful to know
- Follow the collection chronologically if you want the clearest contrast between periods and schools.
- For a shorter visit, choose one transition, such as old masters to Impressionism, instead of surveying every room.
- Combine it with the Prado or Reina Sofía only if you deliberately limit each museum's scope.
